There are countless races run every year to support national veterans' charities. But there's plenty of work to be done on the community level, too, including right here in the Cincinnati area. That's why the Kroger’s Veterans Associate Resource Group—which draws its members from Kroger's general offices and stores—organized the Honoring Our Heroes 5K Run and Walk. Since 2014, the race celebrates the service of veterans and active-duty troops. It also benefits local veterans' organizations, such as reintegration programs that have helped former service members find work at companies like Kroger.
During the 5K, participants absorb confidence and strength from cheering spectators or, in some cases, the motivational techniques of a drill sergeant running alongside them. At the finish line, there's an after party that features live music, food and drinks from local establishments, a kids' play area, and a display of authentic military vehicles.
