The boat is very old and not well maintained. The carpet is worn and torn. Spiderwebs everywhere and the restroom smells awful. The chicken was over cooked and hard to chew. We weren’t able to sit on the upper deck due to all the seating being wet from the rain. Some of the seat cushions are filthy.

The staff was pleasant. The music left something to be desired and the boat itself could use an update. Did enjoy the evening

We really enjoyed the experience overall! The main suggestion I have they should wait for the boat to take off and allow everyone to get on and get settled before serving the food. The meal felt really rushed. The food tasted good the chicken was over cooked and dry. Also, the dock to get on the boat looked really sketchy and needs to be improved along with other parts of the boat. Worth it! 🤗

My husband and I had a really good time. I had never heard of this boat before until I saw it in Groupon. But seems like it's been running for decades now,as the boat is outdated but the music and great tasting food make up for it. Would definitely recommend it.

A unique, relaxing experience to take you out of the busy, downtown scene. The wind likes to blow out on the water, so stick with longer dresses, ladies. Nice, respectful staff, delicious, filling dinner- don’t forget to enjoy coffee with dessert. A bit of a step back in time to experience a date night or outing with friends that’s different from the usual.

We enjoyed the evening and the food was better than we had expected. It was fun meeting new people and the dance floor was great fun. The downfall is the ship is desperate need of repairs. Upon the departure one of the post seemed to catch fire, floor are all uneven, spider webs everywhere and during dinner we were all sweating as the air conditioner was insufficient.

From Our Editors

Floating across the surface of Lake Conroe, the Southern Empress might as well be drifting back in time. The ship perfectly resembles a nineteenth-century sternwheeler riverboat, with two 18-foot paddles churning the water behind it. Inside the three sprawling decks, chandeliers gleam against embossed tin ceilings, and accents of brass and velour flaunt the same Victorian style as the floral carpets.

The boat does boast some modern amenities, however—two of its decks are climate-controlled, which means that its signature cruises can run year-round instead of stopping during iceberg-mating season. They can also head outside to the split-level third deck, which affords the best view of the lake and surrounding forest. Hosts for special engagements, such as weddings or corporate parties, can even reserve this scenery for themselves during private charters.
