Toting mats, towels, and water, students pass beneath snow-white arches to enter a studio decorated only with the occasional book, candle, and plant doing and handstand. Red and coral adorn “the hot room,” the colors’ warmth echoing temperatures that soar to 105 degrees during Bikram yoga sessions. Guided by the Bikram philosophy, instructors shepherd pupils through 26 specific postures that systematically work every area of the body. The practice is designed to increase mobility and restore balance to a host of bodily systems, and utilizes heat to soften the body and help detoxify the body through sweating.
