For owner Michael Winter, Uptown Nutrition is a labor of love. “We are here to fill a void,” he says, “somewhere between the mom-and-pop shops and the big conglomerate.” During any one of the wellness hot spot’s business hours, guests can find him—surrounded by supplements and the black, red, and white of the de Stijl–style interior—feeding the juicers and blenders. Working from recipes of his own devising, he whips up body-bolstering potions full of organic fruits and veggies that include green apple, beets, and kale.
Many of the concoctions aim to stave off work-a-day tribulations, such as sleepiness or the common cold, without resorting to caffeine, pharmaceuticals, or witchcraft. Other drinks fill dietary niches, such as The “Beast Mode” that supplements muscle-building routines with 50 grams of protein from whey, peanut butter, and honey. To help give clients an extra push, Michael and his health-savvy staff carry out metabolic testing and write up custom blueprints for meal plans.
