From Our Editors
In 2003, after visiting her friend's middle-school music class, Beyond Rock director Maria Sarro was hit with an idea: music as a vehicle to help kids challenge themselves and grow. Maria supplied the concept, her business partner Michael Russo supplied the instruments, and in 2004, the first Beyond Rock summer camp plugged in. What began with just 17 kids that summer has swelled into hundreds of aspiring musicians, who participant in age-appropriate programs and workshops to jam with young rockers of similar abilities. Maria and Mike have also built a staff of certified teachers, industry professionals, and other experts. These diverse talents have transformed Beyond Rock into a vast resource, one that offers education in everything from songwriting and instrument technique to stage presence and recording.
