My husband and I came to visit Kentucky rather than just drive through the state. I specifically chose Kentucky Down Under because I had seen it on Groupon several times and I thought it would be neat. My hubby rented one of the golf carts (extra cost) to ease travel up & down & all around campus, but it is walkable if you’re in relatively decent shape. We had a great time seeing the animals, but weren’t quite able to enjoy all exhibits due to prolific mud - so come prepared in boots & have a change of shoes for after. The cave tour was very neat but does require some bending & stooping.

This place is well worth the price (even without the Groupon) for what might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to freely interact with kangaroos. You're allowed to enter a fenced-in area where the kangaroos hop right up to you - they're calm, cute and gentle, almost like dogs. You can also pay for a little cup of food, although it's not necessary. I certainly don't know of anywhere else in the U.S. you can do this. The rest of the park is a bit underwhelming - maybe even a little sad given some of the animals' habitats - but still interesting and worth a quick walk-through. They have several neat birds, horses, donkeys and other farm animals, and they put on two animal shows which were entertaining. You can get a really cool picture with rainbow lorries climbing all over you. Also fun and interesting was the cave tour - while rather small, this saved me the time/money of feeling the need to go to Mammoth Caves down the road. Try and bring some spare cash for animal food and tips.

If you plan to go, check Groupon for discounted admission, but to me the experience is worth full price. My husband and I took our 5 year old. It’s not too much walking. You can rent a golf cart for around $30 but for us it was not necessary. We spent about 4 hours exploring the grounds and that included the guided cave tour (30 min) and 2 animal presentations (30 min each). The cave tour was awesome. It was such an amazing experience. The tour guide, Chris, was awesome. Get at the front of the group if you can so you can hear all the info! The cave is an active cave and is typically wet so make sure you plan accordingly for how you want to dress. (Sneakers were fine). You can see so many animals close up—exotic birds, snakes, wolves, can feed lorikeets for $1 and they will land all over you! The coolest thing was the kangaroo enclosure. They encourage you to walk off the trail to pet and feed them. ($1 for food Cups). We saw a Joey in a mother kangaroo’s pouch! The animals were super gentle—I could have stayed all day! There are also several dogs on the property that love a pet! One will even engage visitors in a game of fetch! All of the employees were super kind and very knowledgeable. The animals all seemed happy and very well cared for. I would highly recommend this to anyone driving down I-65–it’s right off the freeway! I would absolutely go back!

First impressions were this place is terrible. Rented golf cart and they were all dirty and wet. Had to walk in to get a towel. Then three of them wouldn’t start. Was given a free upgrade to a cool golf cart. This place turned out to be so much fun. Bring cash to feed animals and tips for workers.
