About Shodan Karate Academy
Hands and feet whiz through the air during Shotokan karate matches. The Japanese martial art relies largely upon linear punches, blocks, and kicks that may appear simple but actually pack some power. As the only athlete from the state of Indiana to earn a spot on the USA National Karate Team, the head instructor at Shodan Karate Academy has a depth of martial arts knowledge unlike many others. Pupils at the academy work through the three components of Shotokan, beginning with basic techniques. Once the jabs, kicks, and combos are nailed down, they weave them into kata, or patterns of the moves matched to specific footwork and rhythms. The third facet is sparring, which can be choreographed or freestyle depending on the opponents.
