I've been to Gate of India several times and had always enjoyed past experiences there. This most recent trip was disappointing. Service was exceptionally slow. Food took almost 40 minutes to arrive after ordering and was very oily (beyond what you'd normally expect of the cuisine). Servers are also overly pushy about drinks; the owner seems to get annoyed when patrons choose water. Also, water glasses are filled too frequently, when mere sips have been taken, which feels invasive of conversation. Wait until the water level is at half glass before topping up.

The restaurant is located in the most vibrant part of the city. Make an evening of it....cafes, galleries, studios, boutiques, wine bars...lots of places to stroll and you'll need to after a delicious meal at the Gate of India.

From Our Editors

Mohammed N. Anwar has been serving food from his native country for more than 27 years. His restaurant, Gate of India, is everything its name implies: a gateway into some of the subcontinent's most treasured culinary traditions, whether via the smoky flavors of tandoori chicken or the spicy kick of curry with cream lentils. The restaurant is as welcoming as its food is delicious, with beautiful hanging tapestries and waiters who will probably give you a high-five if you ask nicely.
