bought the trip, called for a reservation only to be told he had one weekend available, and it was a week away from when I called. Could not make that date work. The owner said he would call if cancellation happened or try to work out other dates. Never heard anything from him again. Not a great deal if they don't have any options for using it.

Make sure you bring All kitchen supplies. Food, utensils..etc.. Not well marked to get to the place. IN the middle of no where. Be prepared to drive on gravel, then dirt and what seems like a lane. Goes on forever. You think your on the wrong road. But a beautiful river. If you want to get away from it all. And NO ONE will ever find you. This is the place for you.

The camp manager was OUTSTANDING; however I feel the owner ripped us off a bit at check out. He charged us for six gallons of gas when we used three, and threw in a bunch of room taxes. Wanted $60. Beware!

Arrived after some major rainfalls fishing was not very good. Great staff. Back to the 50s cabins. Everything you really need but bring your kitchen linens, towels and soaps. An extension cord is handy also as there are only 2 outlets in the cabin. Serene location. Road to the cabin is iffy you happen to meet another car. Some type of in/out notification would be helpful. All in all we would definitely visit again.

Pretty rustic. Cabins are clean which is good. You may want to bring your own sheets, pillows and you need to bring all towels and washcloths, but the water is hot and resort it is not. For the value, the scenery, remote river with almost nobody on it and great fishing, it's highly recommended. I'm not an avid fisherman, but man's weekend will return to this destination. Jerry even cleaned our fish for us first day. Awesome. Tip: You may want to bring your own gas tank if you use their boats. They "top it off" every night even though those things use almost zero gas. The five-gallon tank would last the whole season, but still worth the trip. Watch out for "Yeti". ;-)

Best to go during peak fishing times. Lots of bugs, so come prepared. Scenery was beyond beautiful. Night sky is gorgeous beyond compare. Cabins are very rustic and just the basics. Come to fish, not hang out in cabin.

Nice big cabins, very friendly and helpful owners and staff. Very remote; be prepared for a long drive down a gravel road to reach it. Beautiful scenery!

Great rustic cabin in a remote location. No cell service, no internet, no TV. Great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of business life. Fishing on the Vermillion River is great. Be sure to leave for a bit to go see the falls and the Vince Shute center.

Bring a portable depth finder as boats are not equipped with them. Camp is quite isolated - bring bait, tackle, etc. Going to town is quite a long trip.

From Our Editors

Gold Mine Camp occupies a secluded spot along the Vermillion River, deep in Minnesota's Superior National Forest. It's an ideal spot for truly getting away from it all. There's no cell phone service, and about the only sound you'll hear is the casting of a reel or the call of an eagle circling overhead.

Walleye, bass, and northern pike fill the 49-mile-long river, which connects Lake Vermillion and Crane Lake. The river is slow moving and tranquil, in keeping with the pace of things at camp. In addition to the abundant fishing, there are a number of hiking trails that wind through the forest. It's not uncommon to see wildlife such as moose and deer roasting marshmallows over an open fire.

After a day on the river or trails, guests retreat to lakeside cabins located near a handful of barbecue grills and a cleaning house for preparing the day's catch. Some of the two- and three-bedroom cabins can accommodate as many as eight guests, and all of them are outfitted with a full kitchen.
