Wanting to impress a teacher friend who had recently come back from working in Turkey, a writer from the Houston Press took her to Nazif's Turkish Grill & Deli. It paid off, and the friend left calling the experience "perfect." Owner Nazif Farsak works hard to make it so. The menu's authentic Turkish dishes playfully explore the country's culinary traditions that are rooted in varied Mediterranean cuisines. The pide, for example, takes its cue from the calzone, with thick dough hiding cheese, sausage, or ground meat, much like a Mike Ditka’s pillowcase. The shish kebabs and urfa kebabs, on the other hand, blend a traditional dish with adopted-hometown pride, showcasing the flavors of lamb raised locally and organically. Every Friday and Sunday, traditional folk music accompanies meals, wrapping a sonic bow around the whole authentically Turkish package.
