Staff was very friendly, outgoing, patient, knowledgeable & aware of current & past views on Slavery. My boyfriend and I are a mixed couple & the tour guide made us both feel welcomed & appreciated us as equals. The guide made no acknowledgement of our race/ethnic background. She made no attempt to treat me as if I needed or could relate on either side of the issue she discussed. She was completely aware of how important the subject was to school children and how she had to present it to them. The guide was completely aware of the gravity of the situation and she behaved in a very respectful manner. I highly recommend this tour & the tunnel experience both in & out. I intend to revisit it with my children.

Ive been on this tour multiple times - it really is a fascinating slice of history. My only frustration is that ive heard conflicting stories/explanations from different tour guides.

Great tour of the museum with the only tour of an underground passage that was actually a part of the Underground Railroad. Worth the trip. Glad I went.

From Our Editors

According to historic record, no parts of the Underground Railroad are documented to have been located underground, except one. And that is where Milton House comes into play. Built in 1844 by Joseph Goodrich, an inn owner known for his stance against slavery, the structure’s underground tunnel led to a basement that became a safe place where runaway slaves could rest and hide away from prying eyes before finishing their journeys. Today, the hexagon-shaped building stands as one the oldest poured-concrete structures in the United States. Tours and exhibits send guests back in time to learn about Wisconsin’s role as a Northern state before the Civil War and how the Goodrich family secretly operated its safe haven.
