I had started to write this and then somehow it became lost - thus I am not sure if it had gone through or not?????? So, am writing it again. I went for an office visit at the Vein Care Specialists and what I thought would be some vein injections. I knew that I needed this done having had a larger vein laser stripped in October, 2012. This was done by a cardiac surgeon and follow-up showed successful closure of the vein in the upper left leg. (I am an RN and about 20 years ago I applied and got a job in a vein clinic in the Chicago area. It was a part time position. I still worked at the hospital also. I was sent to Florida to learn the procedure and stayed for 4 weeks, successfully completing book and hands-on training in vein injections. I do believe that injection therapy is more effective treatment for smaller veins than laser.) The facility for the office visit is really nice! Professional and welcoming. I saw the Dr. who was also very nice! He ascertained from his evaluation that the vein stripping I had done in October was not complete and that I needed more extensive laser treatment on some larger veins, same leg, vs the injections I had gone to the appointment for. I was certainly disappointed, having been told that the laser stripping I had gone through was not a (possible) good/complete job. The Dr said he would give me my $99.00 back, or that I could have an test (ultrasound I believe) for this groupon, the $99.00 would completely cover this office visit and the cost of this test. I opted for the ultrasound and felt comfortable with this. This test was very short and later, I learned that the cost for it would have been over $600.00 - a LARGE amount for what was done and for the very brief extent of it! But, I assumed that this would give a picture of what I might need to have done so worth the cost of the $99.00 groupon. After the test the Dr. spoke with me and told me that he would dictate a letter to my insurance company outlining what needs to be done so they they could consider approval for some of the treatment - larger veins and their treatment are covered by many insurances, to what degree however is up to that insurance company. The Dr asked me if I had followed the requirements of compression stockings, exercising, etc that some insurance companies require before authorizing/covering laser vein treatments. I have/had done this and even had brought the stockings with me to that appointment knowing that they would want me to wear compression after any vein injections. Know that compression stockings need to be of medical grade and are expensive - mine were about $80.00 but they are very comfortable if the correct size is given - mine are GREAT! So comfortable! Anyway, the Dr. told me he would get a letter dictated and I even thought he would be doing this right after he saw me while my "case" was fresh in his mind. When I went to check out I was told that there were no further charges, that my $99.00 groupon covered everything. A written bill was given to me with no outstanding charges noted. I then asked them (office/desk worker) about a second $99.00 groupon I had purchased. This was the first time I ever mentioned having a second groupon. I was told that they would put it in my file and asked me if I wanted a copy of it. I did and was given this copy. Everyone was nice, courteous and I left with a good feeling. I do know that insurance does not pay for cosmetic things and I am older, am prepared to pay for my vein treatment, but not thousands, which is what is required for laser treatments on veins that cannot be treated with mere injections alone. Again, I left with a good feeling. I waited about 3 weeks and heard nothing from the vein facility. One day when I came home from my hospital job, I had an "Explanation of Benefits" form in my mail from my insurance company. This form said the "you may owe" a sum of over $700.00 to this vein facility. I was upset as this is a very large amount of money! I called the vein facility and spoke with whoever answered the phone. She pulled my chart and told me that my bill had in fact been paid and that there was no amount/balance due. I was relieved to say the least!!!!!! As per what the Dr offered and told me, my $99.00 groupon would cover the office visit and the (ultrasound) test. I asked about whether they had gotten a reply from my insurance company about authorization for my vein treatments as per their evaluation of me. The girl said no letter was ever sent and did I get my records sent to them. I was amazed as no one asked me at all about having any records sent! This was the first I had heard of this. I told the girl this and I also told the girl that I was not comfortable asking that previous vein treatment physician (cardiac surgeon) for my records as I see this Dr often at the hospital where I work. He also was my patient in the specialized testing department that I work within the last 2 weeks. He did an excellent job with the large and visible vein he treated but I am not secure in having him treat the smaller ones. This is why I came to the Vein Care Specialists. So, no letter was sent out by the vein facility Dr. as I was told it would be. I then asked the girl about the second $99.00 groupon that was in my file. There were no offerings as to it's future use and/or anything. When I told her that I felt like it was thus, being considered as further payment for the office visit and the ultrasound I had, she said they actually "do not make any money on the groupons but that the groupon organization does!" So, interesting........... Is their offering of a groupon bait to get individuals into their facility, believing that injection therapy is what is needed when they really screen folks and determine more treatment is needed, thus putting more financial earnings into their pockets???? Sorry, I loved the Dr's bedside manner, thought the place (Lake Zurich) to be really a nice appearing place, clean, organized visually, but their follow-through is poor. Now, to the insurance Explanation of Benefits that I received. Is it not fraud to send a bill to the insurance company when a patient is charged a different amount? I believed that my $99.00 groupon covered all expenses and they billed/presented different charges to the insurance company. That is not legal. But, perhaps now, having my written this, will I be receiving a bill that is near the $$$$ that that Explanation of Benefits shows? It was a great deal of money!!!!!!!!!!! No, the vein facility was not paid anything by my insurance company as they are "out of network" and I have a large deductible, but gosh, all was a waste of THEIR time, a waste of my time and waste of my enthusiasm for this place. I am totally disappointed. Any person who purchases a groupon for vein care, purchase a groupon for a dinner, lunch, movie or event instead. You will probably need more than injections that are offered in the groupon! Nothing is free - but I for one, would have been excited to pay for treatment within reason and rid my left leg of the unsightly veins on/in my left ankle........................ I had no reason, when coming to the appointment, to believe that was not what needed to be done vs a large expenditure of money!!!!!! I am sad that I wasted another $99.00 for that second groupon that now sits in their files. The whole thing makes me sad, upset, taken, etc. I've learned my lesson and paid out almost $200.00 for limited results. I do not know where to go next with vein treatment............ I hope this will help someone else in the future, help the vein facility to be aware of their short-comings. (20 years ago, the vein clinic I worked for charged $100.00 for 50 injections, $200.00 for 100. For sure there has been inflation.................... Those memories made me perhaps "stupid" to today's charges...... The $99.00 groupon said it was for about $600.00 worth of vein charges.) Disappointed, and respectfully submitted
