It can be easy to take bread for granted, but the only corners cut at the Old Mill Bread & Flour Co. are the ones sliced off a fresh-baked loaf. Each crusty European bread or ultra-soft American loaf here is a labor of love: the bakers arrive at 3 a.m. for their shifts, and more than 40 bread varieties start to come out of the oven by 8 a.m.
Everyday favorites such as country white and honey whole wheat share the bread boards with an always changing lineup of special loaves, such as pumpkin, challah, and banana nut. But that's not the only thing on the bakers' busy agendas.
Cookies, muffins, scones, bagels, and other baked goods fill the shop with even more fresh aromas. For a heartier meal, the onsite cafe serves hot soups and incorporates Old Mill's signature breads into classic BLTs, gourmet grilled cheeses, and more sandwiches than could fit into Mary Poppins' lunchbox.
