Inspired by the street vendors of Japan, longtime friends Samuel Lu and Ben Lam joined forces to establish Honoo Grill & Noodle, an Astoria restaurant specializing in yakitori—or skewers—hot noodle soups, and seafood dishes. Opening their restaurant in January 2013, the duo adds diversity to the menu by serving traditional dishes such as tare-glazed chicken and housemade vegetable spring rolls alongside their more eclectic items such as grilled salmon steaks with Pan Asian sauce. Although a majority of Honoo's eats pack a spicy punch, entrees can be made with a lower spice level or customers can dampen internal flames with a dessert. Reporter Willa Plank from the Wall Street Journal pointed out the Limoncello gelato dessert in particular as being "tart and smooth," also coincidentally the main characteristic of the best fire extinguishers.
