What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
My business provides group skateboard sessions for kids in an organic and fun manner that promotes progression and self esteem. With Skate True we encourage the skaters to skate true to themselves and enjoy the creativity and individuality that skateboarding provides. We don't have generic curriculums that attempt to blanket teach a trick to multiple different abilities. Instead we cultivate what makes each skater unique and allow them to attempt different tricks that might cater to their body movement type and personality.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
4 years ago we surveyed the landscape of what was available as far as skateboard programs went for the youth. What we saw were programs that had extremely effective techniques and tools, but were missing the mark in regards to the spirit of skateboarding. In essence the free flowing, individualistic, unique, creative nature of skateboarding that made it so appealing to its participants for decades had been removed and was being attempted to be taught in a cookie cutter generic manner like any other sport. What makes skateboarding so attractive to its participants is how different it is from every other sport, and how much one can discover about themselves using their skateboard as a channel. From this idea Skate True was born. For each skater to be free to “Skate True” to themselves.
What do you love most about your job?
The most gratifying part of being the owner and operator of Skate True is seeing the timeless truths of skateboarding and its incredible rewards being reaped in the same manner that I myself benefited from them in my youth and still to this day by younger generations over and over and seeing the same richness of experience for them regardless of what year it is.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
The best reaction I have received was being told by parents that not only had they seen tangible results in their daughters progression on her skateboard through the Skate True program, but that more importantly they have seen a huge progression in her social skills and comfort level with herself in social settings. That having this positive group helped her establish an identity she was confident in and could take to all facets of life.
