From Our Editors
Working with clay is second nature to Anjee Mai. A sculptor since she was only eight years old, she incorporated art into her life early on, and developing her technical skills was, for her, a part of growing up. The result? An artistic style that reflects her philosophy about life, largely through sculptural representations of whimsical characters. "I make monsters as metaphors for humanity," she says. "In order to serve others' growth on this magical journey of life, we must trudge through fear and failure and make friends with our monsters. My art is a celebration of making friends with our monsters." And so it is with her work as an instructor at Anjee Mai Creations, where she encourages her students to make playfulness, fun, and imagination central pillars of their artistic process.
