What You'll Get

Every local community has a story, a history, and a unique personality that cannot be replicated. This is often thanks to specialized, small-scale businesses, like this one, which contribute to a neighborhood’s distinctive character and promote a thriving ecosystem in their community. Small, independent businesses offer diverse products and services, fostering economic resilience by removing the local economy’s dependence on a single industry. When you buy local, you build local, and deepen your connection to your own community.

As a result, patronizing a local business like this is an act of community building. Check out their website to learn more about the local experience you can discover today.

  • Local businesses have generated 65% of the country’s net new jobs over the past 17 years — US Small Business Administration

About A Chat with Lucid Wood

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Lucid Wood is owned by husband/wife artists Ben Cooney and Jill Hayes. Their iconic photography, paired with an artistic digital painting method, make it look as if their photos were taken decades ago. They then transfer their photos onto pieces of wood to create truly unique artistic pieces.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
In 2014, Ben and Jill set a New Year's resolution to plan"creative date days" once a month. For one creative date, Ben and Jill explored Minneapolis, taking photos of some of their favorite places. Another creative date involved trying out photo-wood transfers. Later, Lucid Wood was born.

What do you love most about your job?
Ben and Jill love that Lucid Wood gives them a creative outlet that combines their passions for woodworking and photography.

What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
Looking at a piece featuring the Grain Belt Beer sign, one customer began crying and stated that she and her husband shared their first kiss at this location and later got engaged there. For 20 years, she looked for a work of art that captured the essence of these moments and she finally found it.
