We had been here a few times before. Really nice in the summer because there are tables and chairs around a big lake surrounded by woods. The wine is good and if you go upstairs there is a brewery there.

Saturday afternoon was a great time to drop in on the Pulaski, PA home base of Nova Cellars winery–one of three wineries run by Walter and Katie Novosel in western Pennsylvania. The winery is also co-located with the Brew 32 craft brewery, which is sure to make trips to this location happy for any crowd! Though a short menu of flatbreads and other tasties is available for service either in the brewery or in the winery, the focus is clearly on the liquid sustenance here! There is a solid lineup of wines to appeal to classic tastes, made largely from California grapes. These include, but are not limited to, a very fine Malbec, a hearty and surprisingly robust Pinot Noir, a solid Cabernet Sauvignon, an unoaked Chardonnay that just keeps getting better, and a very tasty Gewurztraminer. In addition, Nova Cellars understands that the bulk of their visitors are not dry wine lovers, and has blended a variety of Great Lakes sweeter grapes into an ensemble of extremely popular sweet wines full of character and flavor. The Elysium Collection features such Midwest staples as Niagara and Concord grapes in unexpectedly delicious–and secretive–combinations with other lesser known varietals. The best way to get acquainted, if sweet is more to your palate's liking, is to do a few tastings of the charming offerings; Gryphon is a steady and full flavored Fredonia-based blend, Phoenix–the winery's most popular–is a dark blush blend that hits a delicate mark, and the relative newcomer Pegasus is an unabashed Niagara-featured blend that will leave kick marks in the event you fail to 'close the gate' in time. Add to all this fun a constantly changing variety of fruit wines made directly from fermented fruits rather than fruit juice-infused white wine, and you have a great destination winery that should be on your list for a visit. Plan to relax and spend some time–the conversation will be good, as the folks I've bumped into here are frequently a great mix of down-to-earth locals and enthusiastic wine trail junkies and both have stories to tell over a fine glass of your favorite libation! You'll be checking your calendar to schedule your return before you've finished your first glass!

A bunch of us gals headed down to sample wine, beer and food. We were not disappointed. The food was delicious - we had several different flatbreads and two different dips. The wine selection was good. I am not much of a wine drinker but enjoyed a few of their fruity wines. The server down in the wine room was very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the variety of beers offered upstairs however the server there was very slow and not very friendly at all.

Nice, but slightly smaller selection of wine. Complimentary tastings, helpful and friendly staff. Definitely worth the taking a drive to, there also is a brewery located in the upper portion of the building. We will be stopping back in again in the future.

From Our Editors

Steeped in a family tradition of winemaking, it was only a matter of time before Walt and Katie Novosel decided to embark on their own journey. The idea for Nova Destinations began on a trip through Pennsylvania back in 2006. Scavenging wine presses and crushers from his parents' house, Walt began to experiment with different recipes. After a few embarrassing batches, he created 30 gallons of delicious and sweet wine. Fast-forward to today, and Nova Destinations features a wide selection of classic wines, including a merlot and a malbec. Open to visitors, their tastings of fine wine are accompanied by savory and dessert flatbreads made in-house.
