River Forest Country Club inherited a rich history. Before it was established in 1965, the land on which it sits belonged to none other than industrialist and steel magnate Andrew Carnegie—a towering figure in the heart of Steel Country. And long before that, the tract of land cradled the cabin of John and Massa Harbison, two of western Pennsylvania's earliest settlers who suffered a harrowing experience of murder, kidnap, and escape in the late 1700s.
Little of this past can be seen, however, in the pristine greens of River Forest Country Club. With sand traps, water hazards, and fairways kept in tournament-level condition, the 18-hole course challenges golfers of all skill levels against a picturesque, wooded landscape. The clubhouse's grill affords similar views of the area surrounding the Allegheny from its deck, where golfers can end their game with a burger and beverage with friends.
