At Nola Green Roots, improving a blighted community begins with literally planting seeds. The non-profit organization educates residents of low-income areas in New Orleans on the basics of organic, chemical-free farming by introducing vibrant community gardens. In addition, programs such as gardening classes and cooking demonstrations help folks grow their own produce and make healthy meals. Memberships, meanwhile, plug people in by letting them help maintain a garden for one hour each week in exchange for a twice-monthly delivery of fresh produce.
