From Our Editors
Melba Wilson opened her Southern comfort food restaurant in Harlem in 2005, and it’s been rolling in dough ever since. The veteran restaurant industry professional – Wilson grew up working at her Aunt Sylvia’s legendary soul food restaurant, Sylvia’s, and had stints at Rosa Mexicano and Windows on the World – believes quality food and good service make for a real restaurant experience. And at Melba’s Restaurant, you will find friendly servers and the owner herself meeting with the guests while pushing out plates of Southern fried chicken, seasoned with paprika and a touch of brown mustard, then dredged in buttermilk and shaken in a brown paper bag. Eggnog waffles with strawberry butter can be served with the chicken, or a small selection of healthy salads keep calorie counts low inside this light-filled, brick-walled space, where homey covered chandeliers give the place a touch of charm.
