What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
NYC Meditator offers a range of meditation classes, including our flagship comprehensive introduction to meditation, tailored one-on-one programs, meditation tricks that one can incorporate into one's daily life, and partner meditation. Unlike many other meditation groups, NYC Meditator teaches meditation in a modern, scientific, and no-nonsense way, and is targeted toward the New York City professional.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
There were three main inspirations to start the business. The first two focus on the need for meditation; the third focuses on the need for NYC Meditator.
First was the observation that many successful people swear by engaging in some form of meditative practice. We see this in actors like Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, media moguls like Oprah, singers like Sting and The Beatles, hedge-fund tycoons like Ray Dalio, athletes like Kobe Bryant, and entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs. This makes one think that there has got to be something to meditation that helps achieve states of peak performance.
Second was the observation that many of us fall into the trap of thinking as follows, "When X-Y-Z happens, then I will be happy." This really is not the way happiness works, though. Happiness is triggered by a bunch of chemicals in the brain, and by harnessing the power of meditation, we can be happy here and now, and not be dependent on internal circumstances.
Third was the realization that most meditation groups teach their practices in a religious or overly spiritual way, which turns off many people. NYC Meditator was designed in response to teach meditation in a rigorous and scientific way to the modern professional while maintaining the essence of ancient practices.
What do you love most about your job?
The opportunity to help people achieve peak performance states is by far the biggest reward of running NYC Meditator.
I also love being able to teach timeless meditation practices such as zen or transcendental meditation with a different spin such as relating it to theoretical physics and philosophies like stoicism.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
"When I finished the Introduction to Meditation class, I was filled with this feeling of warmth toward everything, like I was a part of it, and it was a part of me. Much deeper than the high one gets after a night of going out drinking."
