The service was atrocious. When I called to book the reservation (which is required) and mentioned that I had a Groupon the woman on the phone replied, "I know" in a very annoyed tone. She also told me to please be there on time for our reservation as they had several other reservations at that time (not sure how that matters).
When we got to the restaurant, the hostess never even looked at us...she just asked for a name and then nodded to another employee to seat us. We were not served any water. Service was ridiculously slow. And despite the rude request that we show up on time, the restaurant was nearly empty when we got there--they certainly weren't slammed--so I could give no credence to the short, rude treatment we received.
As for food, we ordered the Hawaiian Tartare for an appetizer. It was completely flavorless, despite the fact that it had mango, avocado, salmon, and tuna in it. I'm not sure how you pull off a dish with those ingredients that has no flavor. For dinner, we ordered the sashimi for 2. The fish looked a bit grey and I felt great trepidation in eating a few of the cuts. However, everything tasted OK and I did clean my plate. The salmon sashimi was excellent--fresh and buttery as it should be. The fluke and arctic char were good, with the exception of one piece of char that I had to spit out--it tasted disgusting, like it had been cooked and was extra fishy. The scallops were fresh, but were served on lemon slices so you couldn't really taste anything but lemon. I LOVE scallops and strongly dislike lemon, so one of my favorites was pretty much ruined for me (though I realize this is more of a personal preference issue). The portion was perfect. We were both full, but not busting at the seams. Each person had three pieces of each type of fish, plus one piece of sea urchin (uni) in a cucumber cup (good, but you could really only taste the cucumber--which is not wholly uncommon as uni is so mild in flavor).
On the whole, we had a large platter of sashimi, an app, two beers, and a glass of wine and we both only paid $29 with the Groupon. I would have been livid it had cost more or if we had paid full price, but it was what it was and I'm an only mildly-dissatisfied customer. We will not be returning in the future, however, with or without a Groupon.
