West 109 Gourmet Deli is a 24-hour Morningside Heights spot known to late-night crowds for an aptly-named sandwich called the 109 Spicy Special. The monster meal comes with Cajun-spiced turkey, pepper jack cheese and mayonnaise, though modifications are always allowed. You’ll just have to ask Sidi, the soft-spoken man who works the toaster (West 109 doesn’t have a grill). Guests can ramp up the heat to their own comfort level with the 109 Spicy Special, or choose from a variety of other simple sandwiches on offer. There are breakfast options as well, including bagels and rolls that make for a simple, if carb-heavy takeaway meal. Coffee, soft drinks, candy and some grocery items are also available inside the no-frills bodega space, which does a brisk business with in-and-out Columbia grads living nearby.
