The Witney Museum is a pleasant museum located near the Hudson River at the end of the High Line and not far from Chelsea Market. Beautiful works by contemporary American painters. Start at the top floor and visit downhill. A little disappointment: the terraces were closed! Too bad... If you can, go on a Friday: it's FREE FRIDAY! But you still have to book a tour schedule (from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.) . Booking is only made 1 WEEK before , very precisely .

Beautiful building with nicely laid out galleries. It was pouring rain when we were there so they closed all the terraces, but easy to see they have beautiful views in all directions. Much smaller collection than Moma or Met, but same price of admission...though I'm sure they have many fewer visitors so understandable to charge more relative to what you're getting. And neither Met nor Moma have such outstanding views. I'm not a modern art aficionado, but did enjoy many of the pieces and appreciate the effort that has gone into curating an American collection. Had a good pastry at the café up top. Not busy on a rainy Wednesday in August.
