From Our Editors

"Even the City that Never Sleeps needs a nap," jokes Nicolas Ronco, the owner and CEO of YeloSpa, which serves as an urban oasis for New York's overworked and overtired masses.

YeloSpa welcomes guests into a boldly colored cocoon of maroon and yellow?colors chosen by Ronco based on Tibetan monks' robes and sashes. The colors relate to specific chakras in the body, with maroon representing the chakra of vision and intuition, and yellow representing the revitalizing spirit of the heart chakra.

Once inside private nap rooms, or YeloCabs, clients gain total control over the atmosphere. They can tailor the color of the lighting, the soundtrack, and even the aroma to their personal preferences. "You can be in the jungle or you can be in a coffee shop in Vienna," Ronco says. The cushioned, leather chairs recline back so far that clients' legs are elevated over their heart, which creates a mild sense of weightlessness, gently slows heart rates, and helps guests sink into a deep state of relaxation. With these conditions, falling asleep is effortless.

The spa?s more traditional services are completely customized to each individual based on an initial consultation. Massage therapists can incorporate everything from relaxing Swedish strokes and deep-tissue pressure to more focused reflexology techniques, depending on the client's needs. Aestheticians use custom blends of balms and salves from the ?minence and Kerstin Florian lines of skincare products. Their facials can even include microcurrent treatments, LED therapy, or microdermabrasion, if necessary.

New York City Day Spa Guide

New Yorkers work hard and play harder, but that fast-paced lifestyle can take its toll on even the toughest go-getters in the crowd. Once stress starts manifesting itself in the physical form (e.g., headaches, stiffness, etc.), that’s a sign that the body is overdue for relaxation. It’s time for a trip to a New York City day spa. In the “city that never sleeps,” it can be hard to imagine a relaxing oasis, but they do exist. In fact, there are many across the city.

Take refuge in Phyto Universe for a much-needed escape from the concrete jungle. Here, specialists take a holistic approach to mind and body relaxation by examining a strand of hair under a microscope and tailoring a day of beautifying relaxation for each person. The result may be a scalp treatment or a “rescue remedy.” Those looking to sneak away from the bustle of everyday life head to the exclusive Institut de Beaute, which is inconspicuously tucked inside an Upper East Side townhouse. This spa offers face, body, and nail treatments that put patrons at ease. After a day of shopping on 5th Avenue, many opt for a day of indulgent beauty at Cornelia where a signature “four-handed facial” is followed by a nap in the sun in the rooftop garden.

Day spas in New York City are designed to counter the fast pace of city life, so they have to bring a little more to the table in terms of a complete relaxation experience. Spa owners understand that it takes more than just a massage to combat the stresses of daily life. Harried and frazzled city-goers find NYC day spas as a calm oasis and place to regroup from the hum of city life. For the ultimate experience, find a day spa that embodies the idea of relaxation, whether it is indulgent, simplistic, natural, or secluded.
