The soldiers and military officers that once called Fort Adams home may be gone, but the paranormal energy they left behind still incites shivers in visitors during the last two weekends of October. Scare-seekers who arrive at the Fortress of Nightmares will have a choice of different haunted attractions including the Tunnels of Terror, which steers day-walkers into a terrifying maze built deep inside the fort's tunnels. Volunteer monsters and maniacs hop out for heart-pounding jump scares along the way. Mayhem 3D uses UV-enhanced effects that require 3D glasses to experience in full while Paranormal is a different kind of experience. Attendees need to rely on their senses as they steer through the haunted officer's quarters while exploring the spirit-filled Fort Adams at their own pace.
Ghost tours offer a less-frightening look into the fort's history and stories, thanks to a local-folklore expert who accompanies the tour guide. Fortress of Nightmares is an annual Halloween fundraiser put on by the Fort Adams Trust, a 501c3 non-profit organization.
