Dumplings were the currency of Ivan Liang's childhood. The owner of Shanghai Bao Kitchen would always ask for second (and third) helpings of his mother's homemade dumplings, but she only gave in if Ivan agreed to eat more vegetables. It was a common scene in the Liang's household: three boys and their mother in the kitchen, preparing the fresh ingredients and then folding the dumplings, before gathering around the table to dip them into mom's made-from-scratch sauces.
The menu at Shanghai Bao Kitchen echoes these childhood days, raising the bar at Westfield Montgomery Mall's dining terrace with dumplings and sauces—all of which are prepared by the chefs onsite. After stepping up to the counter, diners get to customize their meals with dumplings (think chicken or shrimp), organic veggies from kale to bok choy, and signature bao burgers grilled with either chicken or black pepper beef.
These are meals designed to make you feel good. Even more so once you learn about the kitchen's commitment to "honest food," which involves more than just making every carrot take a polygraph test. For the chefs here, honest food means sourcing local and organic ingredients and only using packaging that's 100% compostable or recyclable.
