Customers have been crowding in for a taste of Manhattan at The Downtown Deli since 1961, a breakfast and lunch stop that hits all the authentic notes. There’s the homemade chicken noodle soup, and the signature New Yorker sandwich of pastrami or corned beef mounded high with creamy coleslaw and Russian dressing. Long, snaking lines give time to study the menu over the counter: breakfasts like lox, onions and egg come with potatoes, toast and jelly, while lunches include stacks of hard or Kosher salami on your choice of bread, served with all the fixings – including a crunchy kosher dill pickle. A daily special plays true to the local theme, like Thursday’s roast beef, cheddar and onion sandwich known as the “Lite Rail Special,” honoring the high-tech train tracks outside.
