The venue is delicious; the cafe is quite nice and we had a very satisflying lunch; the special show "Directors' Cut" was exceptional. Combine it with a visit to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and the duo definitely makes a Maine visit worthwhile.

We really enjoyed not only the special exhibit we went to see but also the rest of the collections. The museum has well labeled art objects, good room descriptions at regular intervals on the wall, and many works of art information can be accessed via your cell phone. The cafe is in a lovely area and is especially enjoyable being able to sit right in the midst of the fabulous glass collection! I would recommend spending a couple of hours at least here. It is a moderate sized museum but has incredibly choice art works ,a historic house attached that you can visit, a cafe and a lovely gift and book shop. Its relaxing AND stimulating--a totally enjoyable experience!

We started on the top floor and worked our way down. Saved the Mclellan House for last where, if you choose, you can sit and read for awhile in the second floor reading rooms to finish your visit of the museum.

If you live here you must go. There's something for everyone, even those who don't realize they are "into art". The building is gorgeous, the view from inside are great and the McLellan house is a treat.

From Our Editors

Since Portland Museum of Art opened in 1882, its collection has blossomed to include more than 17,000 pieces of art from the 18th century to the present day. Amid works of sculpture, ceramics, and furniture, the museum sports paintings by European luminaries, such as Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso. At its core, however, are works by Maine artists.

Roughly 10 changing exhibitions round out the museum’s displays, which are spread throughout three buildings: the L.D.M. Sweat Memorial Galleries, the Charles Shipman Payson Building, and the 1801-built McMellan House. Besides artwork, these spaces house the museum’s events, which range from lectures to film screenings.
