A practitioner of martial arts since 2001, Michele Moore realized at some point that most women and teen girls lack know-how when it comes to self-defense. To remedy this, she started EMPOWERED Fitness & Self-Defense as a side project out of a local dojo. There, she began teaching female students not only how to react during a confrontation, but how to avoid confrontations in the first place. Today, she operates out of a variety of locations around the Portland metro area, from gyms to parks. During private lessons, four-week programs, and monthly seminars, ladies learn how recognize and deal with potential threats, as well as how to discern between media-fueled hype and realistic situations in which crimes can occur. They'll also become competent in physical self-defense techniques so they can feel confident and at ease without having to carry a samurai sword everywhere.
