A wonderful way to learn about Cold War history and the ingenuity that Americans possessed from a militaristic standpoint. Tributes to fallen heroes from multiple wars, memorabilia and film archives make this monument a unique take in. We were very fortunate to have had a long term staff member escort us around the ship, telling us unknown stories. A great take in for families however there are sections with substantial and steep stairs so I'd not recommended it for young children or seniors.

Finding the place was a nightmare, parking lot was awful, bathrooms were not working, gift shop was closed on a Saturday!, grass was growing out of the wood planks on deck, they were filming to try and make it a haunted ship for Halloween so we were told we could not go in certain places. I gave it 2 stars only because of the history of the ship. Waste of time and money.

We've driven past the ship for years and are so glad we finally visited! Everyone from our 5 year old to our 14 year old were fascinated. The self guided tour is awesome: you can explore what interests you on your own time.

We liked the self service tour of the battleship. There was plenty of information posted around the ship for us to learn about it. Great for kids and adults.

I loved the tour, and every vet on the ship that we ran into were very friendly, courteous, and helpful. As a vet myself im always looking for ways to support fellow veterans. Thank you....... Dan

From Our Editors

In 1949, the USS Salem began its 10-year career patrolling the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. A flagship of the 6th Fleet during the Cold War era, it served as a “Lady of Diplomacy,” using its massive canons to impress ambassadors, not to fire on enemies. The ship also made headlines in 1953 when it harbored refugees from Greece following a massive earthquake.

Today permanently docked in Quincy Fore River Shipyard, the Salem is one of the last preserved naval heavy cruisers in the world. Three quarters of the ship is used to honor the history of those who served, with features including a Navy SEALs exhibit, the USS Newport News Memorial Room, and a US Navy Cruiser Sailor Memorial. In addition to memories, the Salem also hosts birthday parties and overnight adventures filled with simulated battles and real-life survival instruction. If they listen closely, visitors might even hear some of the spooky sounds that earned the ship a feature on the SyFy channel’s Ghost Hunters in 2009.
