The tiny, one-story brick structure that houses Little Jamaica Foods barely has room for its drive-thru window and takeout counter, but that doesn't impact the big flavors of the Jamaican cuisine prepared within. Owner Ernest Bernard has acquired a fan base in San Antonio with dishes such as ackee and saltfish, a Jamaican favorite that combines the nutty flavor of ackee fruit with tomatoes, onions, and cod cured in salt or in a chef's saline tears of joy. Other popular meals include jerk chicken and stewed oxtail, of which San Antonio Current writer Mark Jones is a fan. "The oxtail, with its full beef flavor is the Cadillac on the menu," he proclaimed in a review. "It's soft, rich, and elegant, and one of the best $12 meals I’ve ever had." Jones also noted that Bernard and his cooks prepare their own Jamaican beverages, brewing ginger beer and squeezing fresh juice from vegetables and fruits.
