Probably our 6th stay here over the last 8 years (kids & grandkids at Camp Pendleton), but it will be our last. The rooms are good, functional, I'd say an 8.5 out of 10, and the backyard grounds are a 9.5 and fun for families with kids: grills, shuffleboard, the pool & hot tub, putt-putt, picnic areas. The lobby and indoor activity area were under construction this trip, so some lost value there, but understandable and these changes happen, it's positive progress and all OK.
We were terribly bothered, however, by the 2 a.m. arrival of a group of young and loud guests next door on the second night of our 5 there - noisy enough to startle us awake, and after about 20-30 minutes of nonstop loud voices and doors slamming, we called the front desk to complain and ask for help. He acted totally unsurprised that they were partying, and said that he would do something about it. Two more calls and about two hours later, it finally quieted down - so they obviously have a hard time enforcing the stated rule on page 7 of their own guest book, regarding quiet time between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. ( and they cite a city code that also calls for this).
These things happen, but on top of them not effectively enforcing their own rule, it was the stance taken by the desk manager (in person) and property manager (by phone) when I questioned them on this the next morning. Yes, that group was (I think) asked to find another hotel and was gone by 10 a.m. that morning, but it was the total lack of any sort of apology or responsibility that was offered to assuage my frustration - which logically became aggravation - because I felt like I was talking to a lying politician on TV. Everything was defensively flipped back around to my words, as though it was my fault ("Are you saying it is a gang? Are you saying that we checked in underage guests? Are you saying that they were inebriated? You know that we can not tell you anything about them, right?"). An awful, protective, almost paranoid approach and we were never even offered a refund on that sleepless night, or a meal in the restaurant - just a refund if WE chose to move out of our room that had been planned for a long time, and included our 4 grandchildren.
I really thought we were being treated like this because we were there on a Groupon. If we purchased from the hotel and also knowing that we were VRI owners, I don't believe this would have been the outcome.
It's really too bad to end our long-term relationship with the SCI on such a negative feeling, our family will remain in the Marines nearby and the property is also part of our timeshare group. But we are done.
