In the summer it is very, very hot there. They do not have fans or AC. Wear cool clothes, cold water and cooling towels for your neck. Maybe even consider donating them a fan or 2.

I took my 15 year old daughter and her friend here and they loved it. The presentation you attend before visiting the wolves was very informative. It was a really hot day, 95º+, so the wolves were trying to avoid the heat as much as we were, but we still saw a few that wandered by the fence a couple times. If we go again it will definitely be on a cool day. The guide talked the entire time we were viewing the wolves, which again, was very informative, but I personally would have liked a little quiet time to enjoy watching them. One note, the dirt road to get to the sanctuary is very rough. I scratched up the side of my brand new car when avoiding one of the many deep holes. I swerved to the right and got scratched by a low lying bush. And my car bottomed out quite a few times. I have a Toyota Corolla. All in all, it was a great Saturday afternoon, the folks that work there were very nice and the wolves seem content.

We brought a group of kids gases 7-11 yrs. The staff gave a wonderful PowerPoint presentation which was very interesting. Then we got to view two wolf packs. The whole experience was great! We learned a lot!!

Check the schedule online, sign up for a weekend tour online, and ask any questions online. They reply quickly! For GPS, try putting in K Q Ranch Resort as your destination. The directions on the wolf center site are great, though! :)

Loved it, it is better to go in the winter months when they are more active.

First of all never ever forget your group on paper! Better yet get the app. They are strict about being on time. We almost didn't get in. Lastly, this center is doing great work in research and breeding to save the CA and Mexican Grey wolves. We learned that wolves are solitary, shy and worth saving.

From Our Editors

California Wolf Center was founded in 1977 to educate the public about wildlife and ecology, specifically the history and behavior of the gray wolf. Located 50 miles east of San Diego, it houses 19 wolves—five Alaskan gray wolves and 14 of the approximately 358 Mexican gray wolves that exist worldwide. The wolves act as ambassadors for the wild, taking part in educational programs for the public. The center also participates in the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan, which aims to help the endangered species recover in the wild. At the facility, wolves live in off-exhibit enclosures that can help retain their natural behavior since some of them will eventually be released back into the wild.
