Thanks to its mobile approach to exercise, Kokoda Fitness has become a fixture in the San Francisco community, hosting daily classes in public spaces such as Crissy Field and Baker Beach. This local focus, however, belies the gym's international roots.
Founder and head coach Nathan Amy hails all the way from Australia, whose Kokoda Trail campaign in World War II is the basis for the gym's name and concept. Nathan was inspired by this military operation, which saw outnumbered Australian Allied soldiers fighting the enemy with limited resources. So he decided to formulate a fitness program that, like the brave army men, would yield big results without a lot of equipment.
Instead of any fancy machines or even a brick-and-mortar gym, Nathan built his business around a fitness truck. That way he can take his no-frills, open-to-all approach to exercise everywhere from local businesses to public parks. He uses functional movements to lead sessions that range from strength training to personal training, scaling his simple yet intense techniques to suit a wide variety of experience levels. He even offers stroller fitness classes for moms who have a hard time finding the time to stay in shape.
