The Mission: Roots is all about sustainability, both in its menu of locally sourced cuisine and its architectural design. It was constructed with low-emission materials, carpet pads made from recycled content, and energy-efficient lighting.

The Vibe: Soft tones color the dining room, where diners find themselves surrounded by maple furnishings and bronze screens designed by San Francisco–based artist Archie Held.

Owner and chef Dennis Leary is the driving force behind Canteen, a restaurant devoted to casual California cuisine. The prix-fixe dinner offered twice a week gives diners the chance to sample some of the best dishes on the menu, but a la carte options are also available several days a week. The fixed-price menu changes every month depending on what Leary finds appetizing. Past dishes have included yellowtail with a potato crust and a salad featuring spice-crusted lamb.

Dining in San Francisco has never looked or tasted as good as it does at Range. This Valencia Street staple was the brainchild of Phil West, who brings his New American style to every dish on the menu. West believes in creating classic comfort food with an unexpected twist. The split pea soup with chives sprinkled over the top and a dollop of sour cream is almost as delicious as the pork dish served with greens and hominy.

With its old-school diner feel, Swan Oyster Depot packs in diners every night of the week. Every meal comes with a free show, courtesy of the chefs tossing food around and cooking dishes just a few inches from diners. This small oyster bar serves fresh seafood the way people want: fast, simple and delicious. The long line out the door shows why this is one of the top San Francisco restaurants.
