The food was great, but they called a few hours before our lunch reservation to tell us that they had booked the place for a private function a couple of days before. They should have called us as soon as they booked it. We had to change our reservation to dinner on short notice, which was a problem b/c we were coming from outside of the city.

I hope they make lots of money so that they can take care of the restaurant aesthetic a bit a make it as special as the food.

Positives: Beautiful plating, Dessert Negatives: Only one of the ten courses was something I would want to eat again, the owner was rude and laughed at us when we didn't want to finish our steak (we could barely chew it), it took 3 1/2 hours - first two courses were served in 15 minutes then we waited over a half hour for our next course (the place wasn't even full). This place was a HUGE disappointment.

This was a great dining experience even though you have to go to the Mission to eat here. The 10 courses were prepared with such TLC by the young chef and $10 corkage is a great deal too. Avoid the crowds, go at lunch time like we did. It was very relaxed, like visiting a relative and having them cook for you.

Fix reservation system. I think you are losing business because you don't accept phone reservations .. and seat me knocks you off the site. We love both restaurants and want you to be busy..

Reservation with groupon is inconvenient. Must text but did not get confirmation especially when change request was made. Would be nice if we could use Opentable to make or change reservation.

From Our Editors

As the foodie culture has exploded in popularity in recent years, it’s become quite fashionable to shell out big bucks to experience tasting menus from talented chefs. However, at the husband and wife restaurant Roxy’s Cafe, chef Manny Torres Gimenez lets people enjoy a 10-course meal for as low as $75, which is practically unheard of in the world of upscale cuisine. “My concept is to do fine dining for ordinary people,” he told Serious Eats.

The seasons and the farmers’ markets influence his tasting menu, which weaves Asian, Mediterranean, and Latin American flavors together. Its 10 courses, which start off light and refreshing before moving to slightly heavier fare, seem to tell a culinary narrative about the type of food Gimenez is passionate about cooking.

The San Francisco Chronicle actually described Gimenez as “one of the new breed of chefs who cook from the heart and aren't deterred by inadequate kitchens and inferior dining amenities.” So though the interior of Roxy’s might have rickety dining tables and what the Chronicle calls “garish” red paint, it’s not the decor that keeps people coming back. It’s an avocado that holds seasoned ahi sashimi within its green walls, pork belly braised for 48 hours, and cheese arepas with housemade guanabana ice cream. And it’s the chef who wants the ordinary diner to feel like they can afford to eat 10 courses without selling their prized collection of waygu-beef cows.
