Sushi rolls were excellent. Service was no more than average. Decor needs updating. Get a few inexpensive art pieces from the Japan Center in SF. We came at opening time 5 pm and there was no paper towel in the dispenser in the bathroom and the basket was full of yesterday's crumpled paper towels. Although I gave it a thumbs up as the sushi rolls were done very nicely, I would return until the decor is improved.

We were the first and only customers in the restaurant and we had to wait about 45 minutes for our food. The sign said they were open at 5:00 and at 5:20 we had to knock on the door.

The young lady server was very very nice, she was able to attend to all the customers last night and never failed to refill our teas. Their food was really good. We had Kamikaze (we ordered it twice because it was sooo good) and the assorted sashimi ( fresh fish and not frozen). Generous portions, reasonable priced and we loved the food we ordered. The restaurant is small but very clean, it is also a plus that the low sodium soy sauce was already on the table that we did not have to bother the lady.

Good value for the food. However, sushi fish offerings very limited. They did not stock many of the nigiri items on the menu. They are a mom and pop operation and are concerned about costs and food waste, so I understand, but when looking for a dining experience, this limits the appeal.

Unusual that they will not allow you to order bento boxes on the coupon. The bento boxes at lunch time are $9.95 but they could allow you to order additional appetizers to make up the difference. The beef sukiyaki was tasty and great on a cold day, but was short on ingredients There was mainly yam noodles, a little bit of beef and a little bit of tofu. Most other places would have shitake, bamboo shoots and definitely more meat.

From Our Editors

The specialty rolls at Hop On Sushi take their titles seriously. The Kimono roll, for example, dresses its tuna, hamachi, salmon, and avocado with a pink soy sheet, evoking the traditional Japanese robe. The Fire Dragon roll's mix of crab, jalapeños, and tuna is not only spicy, it's also torch-seared, then topped in a tangy thai sauce.

These rolls occupy the Maki Maniac portion of an exhaustive menu. Beginning with small plates of grilled king mackerel and ending with bento boxes of teriyaki meats, the selection spans Asian classics as well as creative inventions. California rolls share the table with kimchee-flavored diced salmon and power shooters—a shot of chilled sake, quail egg, and oyster that counterbalances the warmth of udon soups. If they'd rather not navigate the catalog of nigiri and rice bowls, guests can leave their orders up to the kitchen. Omakase-style dining covers three or five courses, all of which depend on the chef's whims and whether his tuna plants are in full bloom.
