Allow plenty of time to get there. The parking/shopping area is beyond crowded on the weekends!

Overall it was an enjoyable afternoon out on the water and we were content. There were not any whale sightings but we did not mind. The crew were cordial though because I have gone out whale watching with other companies, I noticed the different levels of service and attention from the various companies. And they all charge about the same price. First String was average in comparison. Still you can't beat an afternoon out on the water.

Bring a light jacket. It's a little (or a lot) windier once you get passed the breakwater.

Get there early to find a parking spot if you are going on a Sunday. Other than that we had a wonderful time.

From Our Editors

First String Sportfishing sails the open seas off of Southern California, taking passengers on both fishing voyages and educational marine tours. Its largest boat, First String, can hold up to 147 people for its whale-watching tours. On board the 93-foot boat, you’ll find two 9-ton fish holds, two radars, a large-screen television, and a dolphin-to-English dictionary. First String Sportfishing’s other boats depart for both Californian and Mexican waters on fishing excursions. These trips typically yield shallow-water rockfish such as Sculpin and Whitefish and larger varieties including yellowtail and barracuda.
