Created by former world-champion rower Josh Crosby, the compact Indo-Row machine realistically recreates the movements of a boat in water, complete with wake-like sounds. The Indo-Row program debuted at Santa Monica's Revolution Fitness in 2004, sparking an international rowing phenomenon. Each class packs an entire season's worth of rowing into a non-consecutive 50 minutes and some even follow a taped KCRW DJ track-assisted regimen of leg-, arm-, and core-toning work—made beginner-friendly by adjustable resistance levels—culminating in a friendly, sportsmanlike "race" between two teams of students. Weather permitting, Venice's Studio 1-On-1 holds rowing classes outdoors, bringing each group of 13–14 oarsfolk as close to the real thing as possible without interning for a pirate captain. Scheduled sessions are posted online several times a week for both the Revolution Fitness and Studio 1-On-1 locations.
