Many people think a board, a kite, and the ocean is all it takes to start kitesurfing or kiteboarding. In reality, a little bit of encouragement and wise instruction can take a novice far—and ensure they have fun. Penny, an instructor certified by the International Kiteboarding Organization, starts all her recruits on dry land for a recommended three hours, helping them learn to maneuver kites before they take to the water or snow strapped into one. These beginning steps help her students eventually build the confidence to get out onto the ocean in a safe manner, whatever their age, and enjoy the experience to the max.
