A little more than a century ago, many of Seattle’s Italian immigrants settled along Rainier Avenue from McClellan to Atlantic Street, creating an enclave known as Garlic Gulch. They cooked, worshipped, and lived largely within its confines until 1940, when the new interstate highway sliced the neighborhood in half.
