They are closing, first of all. And they were upset about this, but also really rude.

This is a lovely environment and worth the experience. Atma Karam led a wonderful guided meditation with movement and lovely music.

This place or may not be for you, I will try to describe why it is not for me. The experience felt like being in a church, but not the kind of church that provides an opportunity for joyful spirituality or quiet reflection. It felt like a church in a dogmatic, unimaginative, paint-by-numbers way. I have done kundalini yoga before, and this was the same in terms of the physical challenge, but my prior experience was with an instructor who is creative and possesses a good sense of humor. This place takes itself too seriously for my taste. If you like being with people who approach things with serious attitude, this will work for you. Personally, I find that being with people of good humor is a better way not only to have fun, but also to accomplish difficult work. In terms of the physical movements, I'm not a fan of this kind of high-repetition, non-functional movement that is a good recipe for lactic acid buildup (no matter how "cleansing" your breath is) and excessive inflammation. There are many modalities that work on connecting the body and physical motion with spiritual growth and self-knowledge, but this feels like the hairshirt variety. I believe that Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Grinberg, and many other options provide a more dynamic and exploratory approach. That's just me though. Everyone has their own body, their own nervous system, their own ways of interacting with the world and seeking knowledge. I can see how the repetitive physical challenge and repetition of chanting in kundalini yoga would help some people shift their perspective and maybe enter an altered state, which could provide them a tool for breaking out of the day-to-day and expanding their self-knowledge. If you are not interested in physical movement as a tool for personal/spiritual growth, then I think there are far better options for physical exercise. Just about anything that engages the body in functional movement and does not cause excessive or unnecessary inflammation in the body would be a better choice. Regardless, I'm glad I tried it. By exploring something that is not useful to me personally, I was able to clarify more what I do value.

Quite different from what you may think of as a "typical" yoga class. Felt sort of like Yogic church. Might want to google the style of yoga first to see if you want to give it a try. I had a great time!

From Our Editors

As Yogi Bhajan describes it, Kundalini yoga resides somewhere between science and spirituality. It not only strengthens the body with physical exercise, but also “goes right into your heart and extends your consciousness." Wahe Guru Yoga also defines their approach to yoga's fundamental objective as "awaken[ing] the power of the individual to excel—to experience their infinity and fulfill their personal destiny."

In light of these claims, it is easy to see why Wahe Guru Yoga packs more than 25 Kundalini classes with students each week. The studio’s teachers take their cues from Yogi Bhajan, fostering an enlightened community of practitioners and students. Though Kundalini is the primary style of yoga taught at Wahe Guru Yoga, the studio also offers yoga workshops and Ashram hours for students who wish to focus on meditation.
