I tried the brunch. Creative menu but poor execution. I hesitated about ordering a waffle because I really like my waffles crispy. The waitress said she'd ask them to cook it a little longer. Didn't happen or maybe it did and still didn't make a difference. The waffle was pretty uninspiring. I ordered the mushroom/cauliflour tart, too. The crust was overcooked on the thick, top crust and undercooked down below. The flavors were Ok but nothing special. Neither was the strange sauce spread on the plate. The crispy prosciutto was excellent however not enough to save the dish. Also, sad coffee. I'm, unfortunately, a coffee snob, not because I want to be but because I've had so much good coffee in Seattle that I just can't handle bad coffee. And no espresso machine??? Ok, I though french press could be Ok but this particular coffee I found unpleasant. Sorry I don't have the descriptive words to get across why I didn't like it. Maybe "tangy", "acidic", "not full-bodied". I don't know but didn't finish it. Also, it was a cold, grey, Seattle morning (hey, it's January) and the door was propped open. I survived, the place was empty and I had my choice of seats so I found a place far from the door and left my coat on. Strangely, the waitress didn't close the door when I mentioned how cold it was in there. I get that the Barrel Thief is not breakfast oriented, maybe not even food oriented but more of a hard-liquor-tasting bar.

A $10 mixed drink that's just larger than a shot glass? And full of ice? Great selection of scotch and whiskey, but price of food and size of drinks left me feeling like even with a Groupon it wasn't a good deal.

From Our Editors

The Barrel Thief, previously Wine Tea Chocolate, got a new name in recognition of the establishment's revamped menu of wines and fine spirits. Above the main bar, rows and columns of hanging glasses reflect the natural light flooding in through the front windows. They stand at the ready for more than 150 by-the-glass wines and botany-inspired cocktails.

At tables constructed from 100-year-old reclaimed fir, visitors dash whiskeys against the rocks or sip wine from one of hundreds of bottles while enjoying small plates of homemade hummus and cured meats. Outside, a helix of lights wraps around the wooden bounds of the patio, a place that allows guests to catch a cool breeze and toast their beers in the sun's rays.
