The place wasn't open when we got there, even though I had called and confirmed that they would be open and have kayaks available. :( Also, the address listed on their website is not correct.

My husband and I and our two kids use two Groupons, even though I don't think we were supposed to use more than one per family. We rented out of Island Lake, which is located right at the main beach. The only thing I might pass along to families with children. Canoeing lakes is more difficult than rivers, from my experience, although we did have a breezy day, which didn't help things. It's difficult to stay together, to steer, and it can be difficult on the adult's arms! Previously I had always gone to the Proud Lake location, which is a river leading to a lake. Much easier to navigate in my opinion. There are really no stop-off points either, and it's not as interesting as the river. We did go under the bridge to Kensington Metro Park. Later on, we looked at a map, you can go left from the canoe place, and there is a river. We totally missed it. That would have been nice if they had mentioned that when we started. Good time though.

They false advertised, saying it was a "sunset canoeing trip" when I called they say u can't see the sunset because they close to early and they only put that in there because they thought people would but it more Then they said they aren't taking reservations, like they said they did on the groupon, so I had to drive over and hour to hope for a canoenot worth it & won't go there again, sadly

From Our Editors

After buying their first canoe in 1942, Chester and Stella Heavner were hooked. So were their friends. After constantly loaning out their red-canvas Old Town canoe, the pair invested in two more and started charging a nominal rental fee. In 1953, they made it official with a patch of riverfront property, eight canoes, and a trailer.

Today, Heavner Canoe & Kayak Rental is run by Chester and Stella’s eldest son, Alan. He and his staff manage an inventory of more than 200 canoes and kayaks, which they rent at three locations along the Huron River.
