Take some insect repellent and sit close to the guide. He's got some really interesting info. Also, make sure to use the restroom before you get there.

If you bring kids, bring them entertainment and cold drinks. The gate opens promptly at 6:30, so don't get there too much earlier. There's plenty of space, so no need to be "first in line". I'd call to ask if you can drive in on your own at 7. You pay after you park, walk up a short paved hill and wait of brats to emerge. They can come out anywhere from 6pm-9pm. Wait was long for kids. I loved it, they thought it was torture. (Kids are 4, 8 & 10. 10 year old was OK). Without the wait it would be perfect. Plan accordingly. Otherwise, it is amazing! 10000+ cute bats flying out, great info, nature, sunset, wonderful.

Be patient. The wait is worth it.

Fairly long drive from San Antonio, but definitely worth it for adults, one 15 year old, and one 11 year old. An amazing sight and very informative scientist answering a ton of questions.

The guide was very knowledgeable! The hill country view amazing! Nice way to end a day of tubing on the Frio. Bring lawn chairs, guestions, bug spray, binoculars (you get close to the bats but for other views), camera and get ready for a nicevening

Unless you have AT&T, cell phone GPS not reliable so map your route ahead of time. Steep but not too long walk up to viewing area. Hats are a good idea since you are sitting under the flight path. Blankets or folding chairs to sit on also good idea.

From Our Editors

Every evening from March to September, just before sunset, as many as 12 million Mexican free-tailed bats erupt from Frio Cave in search of dinner. The bat colony is the second largest in the world. Tour guides lead a caravan of visitors driving their own cars two miles from the ranch gates to Frio Cave, then guests are taken to the top of a hill to witness the winged spectacle. With the sun low in the sky and the bat signal shining, the cloud of bats bursts forth alongside cave swallows and rock wrens, seeking insects to eat while evading birds of prey such as kestrels and peregrine falcons. After spending the spring and summer mating in Frio Cave, the bats resume their migration to Mexico and the college students return to their dorms.
