For mother-daughter duo Crystal Schaffner and Jenica Braddock, the first step toward sweet success was a sweet failure. When the two first appeared on the Food Network's Cupcake Wars in 2011, they had almost no experience making cupcakes and were eliminated in the first round. But instead of being bested by their defeat, they were inspired by it. Soon they started baking cupcakes every day, perfecting classic recipes and inventing new and modern twists on the traditional treat. In 2012, they returned to the show and baked and frosted their way to victory—a feat that was repeated again in 2013.
Today, the two-time Cupcake Wars champs peddle their delectable creations around town in their iconic rainbow cupcake truck in addition to a brick-and-motor location where customers can find other treats like frozen custard. Daily flavors include creme brûlée and cookies and cream, while seasonally-rotating cupcakes include springtime varieties like lemon coconut and apple pie cheesecake, a December favorite.
