Plenty of people take up running to offset their love of donuts and other sweets. The Krispy Kreme Challenge, however, encourages runners to indulge their sweet teeth. The event, which began in 2004 as a challenge among North Carolina State undergrads, begins at the university's Memorial Belltower. Participants then run 2.5 miles through downtown Raleigh to the Krispy Kreme at Peace and Person Streets, where a dozen donuts are waiting in all their glazed glory. After consuming the donuts, runners head back to the bell tower as quickly as possible. Aside from testing runners' physical abilities, the race benefits the North Carolina Children's Hospital.
