Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Disappointing stay and old room There was a line at check in and we were 3 families together. About 6 months prior to our stay I had contacted the hotel requesting rooms on the same floor and having worked in hospitality at a senior level, I know this is doable. However on checking in we were in different buildings let alone the same floor. The supervisor Dee was most unhelpful. Also, the key wallet we were given had the wrong building circled and on checking with security I was told to stand back in the line to clarify. The room was sub standard and the staff were well trained in asking guests to pay extra for upgrading. Location is not great either as it’s at the north end of the strip. Our room had torn towel, ripped carpets, dust gathered on skirtings and behind doors . The hand basin was outside the bathroom but the bathroom had a sliding door so if someone had a get out no one could use the sink- have never seen this poor layout before. Would definitely not Recommend.

Probably ok for low end room So I really wish this was a less expensive hotel because the quality of the suite did not match the price. The positive is that the hotel is VERY clean! But we were in an Alexandria Suite. The room was huge. The furniture was very low end. There was a couch in the room (big white asymmetrical you see in the ads) made of the plastic fabric that covers outdoor furniture. The bathroom set up is odd and not great for privacy. There was a huge floor to ceiling window from the bedroom into the shower with metal shades accessible from the bedroom side only. The door to the toilet was a HUGE heave metal/mirror barn door that had big gaps on either side. There was no other door into the bathroom. The staff was super nice. It’s great to be right on the monorail line. But for the money spent I would probably pick a different hotel. I understand they just went through a renovation so do appreciate how very clean the hotel is.

I would return to this hotel. Perhaps I was just surprised because I remember the old Sahara, but I thought the renovated hotel was beautiful; the rooms had all the amenities, the beds were comfy, shower good. The pools were great, if crowded. Uber pickup was a little walk. Good casino. You can check-in before 4pm if you pay extra :(. Overall, above average.
